Vandals suspected in spill State environmental officials think vandals were responsi- ble for a 1,900-gallon diesel fuel spill in the Western Alas- ka village of Tuluksak. The spill was discovered late *Thursday at a storage tank near the village power plant.Officials with the state Department of EnvironmentalConservationthinkthespilloccurredearlyThursday.De-- ;partment of Environmental Conservation spokesman Charles Fedullo said the fuel spilled on ground covered _with two feet of snow.It did not appear to pose a threat to the Kuskokwim River or the village drinking water sup- ply,Fedullo said.By Saturday workers managed to clean up about 350 gallons of the fuel and cut trenches in the snow in an effort to stop its spread. Volcanoes'behavior normal KENAI -A little bit of steam is nothing to get excitedabout, according to Terry Keith at the Alaska Volcano Ob- servatory in Anchorage. She says her phone has been hot " with calls from residents worried about the plumes of va- por that have been visible above Mount Iliamna and Mount - Redoubt for the past few days.Keith said the two active volcanoes are always emitting gas and water vapor.Cur- rent atmospheric conditions just make it more visible, she *said."It happens every spring and it happens every fall.. We can just about tell the weather by it,”Keith said.Keith said sensors on Iliamna and Redoubt relay information con- tinuously to the observatory. The seismic monitors have been quiet recently."There's nothing going on,”she said. Field hockey is one of the few Special Olympics events where mentally disabled athletes play with nondisabled partners, said Special Olympics Alaska Execu- tive Director Jim Balamaci. The partners keep the game moving while the athletes take most of the shots. As soon as players ap-_ proached the goal during games on:Sunday, spectators yelled, "Shoot, shoot,” Kodiak athlete Kevin Barber, 25,took that advice often,scor- ing a total of six goals through- out the tournament.Athletes from other teams said Barber was awesome to watch.
