Hydaburg Outreach The Hydaburg energy audit site visits were done during the first week of March.During that time a presentation was made before the 4",5",and 6"grade students. The presentation is largely in question &answer format and the topics include: 1.Uses of energy in the home and in school. This helps students understand how energy is a critical part of their lives. 2.Sources of energy. This includes a discussion of the types of energy the students use such as electricity, fuel oil,and gasoline. The topic also includes the differences between renewable and non-renewable energy and the potential renewable sources in their community. Saving energy.Simples ways to reduce energy use in the home and in school such as: turning off lights and applicances, lowering temperature settings, using compact fluorescents, etc. 4.Show &tell with compact fluorescent lamps. The class participates in a cost/benefit analysis to see just how much can be money can be saved by one CFL over its life (10,000 hours). Both capital and operating costs are considered. 5.Reasons for saving energy.A wrap up discussion of why energy conservation is important stressing the need to preserve limited resources for future generations, saving money, and reducing pollution.losIn Hydaburg, about 16 students and two adults (teacher and principal)attended the class. It lasted about 40 minutes. Besides the class presentation I also had a brief discussion with the itinerant mental health counselor about full-spectrum lighting and SAD.He was already of the opinion that the term was largely a marketing ploy and was just looking for confirmation. Finally,I discussed (by phone)the possibility of waste heat from the power plant or an intertie to Bear Lake Hydro with Alaska Power and Telephone. There are definitely plans for an intertie in the works. In fact, there is another hydro source near Hydaburg that has even more potential than Bear Lake.It has not yet been developed because Hydaburg alone does not have enough demand. However, once the intertie is built, the new source will be much more viable.
